Many South Florida plants run both platforms. Neither one is “better.” What matters is maintaining each one properly.
Shared basics
- Keep dated program backups off the machine.
- Write down firmware and software versions before you change anything.
- Keep cabinets clean, cool and dry. Check filters and fans.
- Review the fault and diagnostic buffers during every visit.
Allen-Bradley / Rockwell
- Match your Studio 5000 / RSLogix version to the controller firmware.
- Check the lifecycle status of SLC 500, PLC-5 and MicroLogix hardware and plan migrations.
- Check controller batteries and memory modules where they’re used.
- Keep EtherNet/IP network diagrams and IP lists current.
Siemens
- Save TIA Portal / STEP 7 projects as archives along with the matching software version.
- Check the diagnostic buffer and the module status LEDs.
- Plan S7-300/400 to S7-1500 migrations before parts run out.
- Document PROFINET device names and topology.
Mixed plants
Standardize your tag naming, backup storage and change logs across both platforms, and pick one controls contractor who works with both.
